This study explores how public assistance recipients experience social exclusion. I examined 13 participants on public assistance and collected data through in-depth interview and home visit. The study generated five dimensions of social exclusion and related cultural themes. The five dimensions of social exclusion (and related themes) are 1) the dimension of event before social exclusion (financial failure), 2) dimension of daily exclusion (material deprivation), 3) dimension of exclusion from the social system (damaged rights and identity), 4) dimension of exclusion from future well-being (deprived hope), and 5) dimension of exclusion from psychological well-being (weakened coping ability). I analysed the context of social exclusion experiences by reviewing the relationships between the dimensions of social exclusion. The analysis showed that families on public assistance fell into poverty due to events before social exclusion and experienced daily exclusion as a result of material deprivation. Furthermore, they had experiences of their rights and identities being damaged by exclusion from the social system, deepening their social exclusion. Since the five dimensions of social exclusion interacted one another dynamically, public assistance recipients exercised complex and multi-dimensional exclusion.
